Character Study of Helmer in Ibsens Famous Play

One of the two main characters in the play, Torvald is the husband whose dolls house is torn apart at the end of the show. His character is far from ideal—but upon seeing a production of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, audiences are left with an important question: Should we feel sorry for Torvald Helmer? At the plays end  his wife, Nora Helmer, abandons him, leaving behind her three young children. She claims that she doesnt love him. She can no longer be his wife. He begs her to stay, yet Nora denies him, walking off in the middle of the winter night, slamming the door behind her. When the curtain closes upon a pathetic, defeated husband, some viewers find that Torvald has received his comeuppance. Torvalds demeaning personality and his hypocritical actions justify Nora’s harsh decision to leave. Examining Torvald’s Character Flaws Torvald Helmer possesses many obvious character  flaws. For one, he constantly talks down to his wife. Here is a list of his pet names for Nora: â€Å"My little skylark†Ã¢â‚¬Å"My little squirrel†Ã¢â‚¬Å"My little singing bird†Ã¢â‚¬Å"My pretty little pet†Ã¢â‚¬Å"My little sweet-tooth†Ã¢â‚¬Å"My poor little Nora† With every term of endearment, the word â€Å"little† is always included. Torvald views himself as the emotional and intellectual superior of the household. To him, Nora is a â€Å"child-wife,† someone to watch over, to instruct, nurture and censure. He never considers her an equal partner in the relationship. Of course, their marriage is one typical of 1800s Europe, and Ibsen uses his play to challenge this status quo. Perhaps Torvald’s most dislikeable quality is his blatant hypocrisy. Many times throughout the play, Torvald criticizes the morality of other characters. He trashes the reputation of Krogstad, one of his lesser employees (and ironically the loan shark that Nora is indebted to). He speculates that Krogstad’s corruption probably started in the home. Torvald believes that if the mother of a household is dishonest, then surely the children will become morally infected. Torvald also complains about Nora’s late father. When Torvald learns that Nora has committed forgery, he blames her crime on her father’s weak morals. Yet, for all his self-righteousness, Torvald is a hypocrite. In the beginning of Act Three, after dancing and having a merry time at a holiday party, Torvald tells Nora how much he cares for her. He claims to be absolutely devoted her. He even wishes that some calamity would befall them so that he could demonstrate his steadfast, heroic nature. Of course, a moment later, that wished-for conflict arises. Torvald finds the letter revealing how Nora has brought scandal and blackmail into his household. Nora is in trouble, but Torvald, the supposedly shining white knight, fails to come to her rescue. Instead, here is what he yells at her: â€Å"Now you have ruined my entire happiness!†Ã¢â‚¬Å"And it’s all the fault of a featherbrained woman!†Ã¢â‚¬Å"You will not be allowed to bring up the children, I can’t trust you with them.† So much for being Nora’s dependable knight in shining armor! Examining Noras Complicity To Torvald’s credit, Nora is a willing participant in their dysfunctional relationship. She understands that her husband sees her as an innocent, child-like persona, and she struggles to maintain the faà §ade. Nora uses the pet names whenever she tries to persuade her husband: â€Å"If a little squirrel were to ask every so nicely?† Nora also carefully hides her activities from her husband. She puts away her sewing needles and unfinished dress because she knows that her husband does not wish to see a woman toiling away. He wishes to see only the final, beautiful product. In addition, Nora keeps secrets from her husband. She goes behind his back to obtain her ill-gotten loan. Torvald is too stubborn to ever borrow money, even at the cost of his own life. Essentially, Nora saves Torvald by borrowing the money so that they can travel to Italy until her husband’s health improves. Throughout the play, Torvald is oblivious to his wife’s craftiness and her compassion. When he discovers the truth, in the end, he is outraged when he should be humbled. Should We Pity Torvald? Despite his many flaws, some readers and audience members still feel tremendous sympathy for Torvald. In fact, when the play was first performed in Germany and America, the ending was changed. It was believed by some producers that theater-goers would not want to see a mother walk out on her husband and children. So, in several revised versions, â€Å"A Doll’s House† ends with Nora reluctantly deciding to stay. However, in the original, classic version, Ibsen does not spare poor Torvald from humiliation. When Nora calmly says, â€Å"We two have a lot to talk about,† Torvald learns that Nora will no longer be his doll or â€Å"child-wife.† He is astounded by her choice. He asks for a chance to reconcile their differences; he even suggests that they live as â€Å"brother and sister.† Nora refuses. She feels as though Torvald is now a stranger. Desperate, he asks if there is the smallest hope that they might be husband and wife once again. She responds: Nora: Both you and I would have to change to the point where†¦ Oh, Torvald, I don’t believe in miracles any more.Torvald: But I will believe. Name it! Change to the point where†¦?Nora: Where we could make a real marriage of our lives together. Goodbye! Then she promptly leaves. Grief-stricken, Torvald hides his face in his hands. In the next moment, he lifts his head up, somewhat hopeful. â€Å"The miracle of miracles?† he asks himself. His longing to redeem their marriage seems sincere. So perhaps, despite his hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and his demeaning attitude, the audience may feel sympathy for Torvald as the door slams shut on his tear-stained hopes.

The charge of alliance with the Red hell Essay Example

The charge of alliance with the Red hell Paper I intend to study the Crucible by Arthur Miller. I will be looking at act 3, through the eyes of a director. The character I will mainly be focusing on is Abigail Williams, a late teen who had committed adultery with the well thought of, John Proctor. The play was written in 1952 and was an allegory of the political state of America under the supervision of Senator Joseph McCarthy. The play was set in 1692 in a god-fearing, puritan village that was isolated in the east of Massachusetts. This play is based upon the Salem witchcraft trials, two centuries before the book was written and therefore the location of the play was thought of to be masking the anti-communist message it was portraying. The basis of the play is of a group of young female teens that had danced in the woods within the hours of darkness. Yet because of the beliefs that these acts were closely related to witchcraft, the readings of the bible would instruct them to hang all those who participated. Yet to avoid their own prosecution the blame was passed to many innocent people, including a West Indian slave, who because of her colour and belief in spells was an easy target and another was the wife of John Proctor. John himself then becomes the main suspicion of practicing witchcraft after the tables are turned once again. He was asked to give names of those he knows of having connections with the devil to save his own life, he refused to answer their questions as did Miller when he was summoned before McCarthys House Un-American Activities Committee. Many innocent people had come to a gritty end, after scapegoats that were part of McCarthys House Un-American Activities Committee, could prove them guilty on the flimsiest of evidence. Stage Design I have chosen the below layout because I believe it gives the best possible chance for all of the characters to be seen and heard clearly throughout this act. Dramatic Techniques As a director the dramatic techniques of Miller will be incorporated into my play while personal techniques will be added to feed the requirements of a 21st century audience. Throughout the play Millers techniques seem very precise in the movements and the way characters express themselves. In Act 1, Miller adds instructions about the amount of light pouring through a narrow window. Therefore showing he considered the smallest of techniques to be important. Not only does he describe the objects in the house but also the mention of the clean air gives a more defined feel. He then follows to describe the positions of the opening characters; Reverend Parris kneels beside the bed, evidently in prayer and his daughter Betty Parris is lying on the bed, inert. Following these directions, right the way through act 1 Miller tries to sum up the feelings about the devil and the contrast between good and evil as he questions whether diabolism is a holy practice. Miller then tells of how we can now consider the devil as a necessary part of a respectable view of cosmology, therefore really establishing the idea of good and bad religion fully into the play. During act 1, Miller compares the relationship with people and the devil with a professor at his university and the pupils he taught. He then makes the crucial comparison about America around his era. He quotes; and in America any man who is not reactionary in his views is open to the charge of alliance with the Red hell. Political opposition, thereby, is given an inhuman overlay Therefore backing up his theory of McCarthys scapegoats and his own personal experiences, they incorporate into the success of this scene. Once again Miller describes the basic techniques to introduce act 2, he describes the position of the furniture, the date, and he also describes an action of John Proctor to ensure the audience understand he is at home. He directs Proctor to lean his gun against the fire as he swings a pot from underneath. He smells whats in the pot, and then tastes it. He then adds a pinch of salt and tastes again. We then hear the footsteps of Elizabeth. Other techniques and statements are made throughout the act, but none have the similarity in length as those we see in act 1 that set the scene.

Free Essays on Conflicts In Communication

Conflicts in Communication â€Å"I just don’t understand men!† This expression is a popular one used by women of all ages. From adolescents to senior citizens, women are at a struggle in understanding why men do the things they do and vice versa. It is a general understanding that communication is the key to any relationship. However, both sexes use language for different purposes making it difficult to comprehend one another. In chapter 3 of Understanding Human Communication, Gender and Language is discussed in detail. According to the book, both genders share common topics of discussion such as movies, television and work. However, women generally use language for social purposes, to discuss personal problems and feelings. While on the other hand, men use language in a more impersonal manner, to complete the task at hand with minimal expression of their emotions. Women view conversations with other females a necessity, while men view conversations with other males as something they simply lik e to do. Through my experiences, I can honestly say that I agree with these descriptions of male and female language. Obviously not everyone complies with these descriptions, but for the most part these generalizations are true. Make Hot Ice From Vinegar and Baking Soda

Make Hot Ice From Vinegar and Baking Soda Sodium acetate or hot ice is an amazing chemical you can prepare yourself from baking soda and vinegar. You can cool a solution of sodium acetate below its melting point and then cause the liquid to crystallize. The crystallization is an exothermic process, so the resulting ice is hot. Solidification occurs so quickly you can form sculptures as you pour the hot ice. Fast Facts: Hot Ice Science Experiment MaterialsBaking SodaVinegarConcepts IllustratedSupercoolingCrystallizationExothermic Chemical ReactionsTime RequiredFrom start to finish, this experiment takes about an hour. Once you have the hot ice, you can quickly melt and recrystallize it.LevelBeginner to Intermediate LevelNotesThe chemicals in this experiment are non-toxic. However, because liquids are boiled, adult supervision is recommended. This project is best for middle school and above. Sodium Acetate or Hot Ice Materials 1-liter clear vinegar (weak acetic acid)4 tablespoons baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Prepare the Sodium Acetate or Hot Ice In a saucepan or large beaker, add baking soda to the vinegar, a little at a time and stirring between additions. The baking soda and vinegar react to form sodium acetate and carbon dioxide gas. If you dont add the baking soda slowly, youll essentially get a baking soda and vinegar volcano, which would overflow your container. Youve made the sodium acetate, but it is too dilute to be very useful, so you need to remove most of the water. Here is the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar to produce the sodium acetate: Na[HCO3]– CH3–COOH → CH3–COO– Na H2O CO2Boil the solution to concentrate the sodium acetate. You could just remove the solution from heat once you have 100-150 ml of solution remaining, but the easiest way to get good results is to simply boil the solution until a crystal skin or film starts to form on the surface. This took me about an hour on the stove over medium heat. If you use lower heat you are less likely to get yellow or brown liquid, but it will take longer. If discoloration occurs, its okay. Once you remove the sodium acetate solution from heat, immediately cover it to prevent any further evaporation. I poured my solution into a separate container and covered it with plastic wrap. You should not have any crystals in your solution. If you do have crystals, stir a very small amount of water or vinegar into the solution, just sufficient to dissolve the crystals.Place the covered container of sodium acetate solution in the refrigerator to chill. Activities Involving Hot Ice The sodium acetate in the solution in the refrigerator is an example of a supercooled liquid. That is, the sodium acetate exists in liquid form below its usual melting point. You can initiate crystallization by adding a small crystal of sodium acetate or possibly even by touching the surface of the sodium acetate solution with a spoon or finger. The crystallization is an example of an exothermic process. Heat is released as the ice forms. To demonstrate supercooling, crystallization, and heat release you could: Drop a crystal into the container of cooled sodium acetate solution. The sodium acetate will crystallize within seconds, working outward from where you added the crystal. The crystal acts as a nucleation site or seed for rapid crystal growth. Although the solution just came out of the refrigerator, if you touch the container you will find it is now warm or hot.Pour the solution onto a shallow dish. If the hot ice does not spontaneously begin crystallization, you can touch it with a crystal of sodium acetate (you can usually scrape a small amount of sodium acetate from the side of the container you used earlier). The crystallization will progress from the dish up toward where you are pouring the liquid. You can construct towers of hot ice. The towers will be warm to the touch. You can re-melt sodium acetate and re-use it for demonstrations. Hot Ice Safety As you would expect, sodium acetate is a safe chemical for use in demonstrations. It is used as a food additive to enhance flavor and is the active chemical in many hot packs. The heat generated by the crystallization of a refrigerated sodium acetate solution should not present a burn hazard.

Importance of Work-Life Balance Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Importance of Work-Life Balance - Research Paper Example Giving the employees added benefits such as the installation of a gymnasium in the work facilities for the free use of the employees can enhance the work life balance of the staff. A third technique that can be used to improve the work life balance of employees is giving the workers extended vacation time every year. Instead of the industry standard of two weeks of vacation time, the firm can offer one month of vacation time per year. Vacations are important because people that suffer from recreation deprivation act crankier and the person becomes more critical of their co-workers (Reinhold, 2012). A few years ago I faced a tough family situation that required me to take time off work to help my family. I could not ask for vacations because a few months earlier I used up all my vacation time. I also could not afford to take an unpaid leave because I was in a tough economical situation as well. I talked to my supervisor about my problem. He told me that I was in luck because he could arrange for me to work flexible hours despite the fact that a flexible time program was not available at the firm yet. The careers paths of men and women are often different due to gender issues and the different responsibilities societies impose on genders. Women often have tougher challenges in the workplace due to family responsibilities. After pregnancy the child is highly dependent on his mother. Women typically perform more shores and have higher house responsibilities than men. During the last 30 years the role of women has changed in the workplace (Erbschloe, 2009). Society has imposed on men a higher financial responsibility over the home finances. Men consequently are expected to obtain better paying jobs which required a higher level of education. There is a lot of parity in the workplace among genders, but the glass ceiling has hurt the chances of women moving up the corporate ladder. In other parts of the world such

Buddhism and Christianity Essay Example for Free

Buddhism and Christianity Essay Thesis: While both Christianity and Buddhism were religions that encourages kindness and renunciation of wealth, Christianity caused a stir with Jesus’ hatred against the greedy rich and powerful and his alliance with the lower class, which eventually lead to his execution, whereas Buddhism’s leader, Buddha, spread a message that was not threatening to the high class, letting him live his life until his natural death at 80. The two tables show changes and continuities for two  major religions, Christianity and Hinduism. The table shows my key thinking skills by being able to point out key continuities and changes. My Table is a little bit sparse on the continuities side, but the changes for Christianity are plentiful. I need to work on researching with more effort. Thesis: Although the four main religions, Buddhism, Brahmanism, Hinduism and Christianity affected the role of women, the poor social role of women outside of church was uniform in all the regions of these religions. Patriarchy is very much alive in all of them. My spoke diagram shows a variety of religions. The statements are also positive and negative towards patriarchy. It shows my key thinking skills by displaying quotes for all the statements. My spoke diagram could use more statements, five seems like enough, but more would be better. I think I did a great job on putting quotes for all the statements. Analyze similarities and differences in attitudes and treatment towards women in TWO of the following societies in the Classical period. Han China (206 B.C.E.–220 C.E.) Tradition of having local princes also was a cause of the fall of the Maurya Empire, because they made it easier to rebel against the main government China During the HAN dynasty, Confucianism came back into government with high sights on education, the tradition of using the mandate of heaven ensured that the Han Empire fell by 3rd century CE. And the Qin Empire fell in a mere 20 years since he lost his mandate of heaven Confucianism taught orderly society with relationships. The cause and effect table lists the causes and the effects of the spread of two major religions, Buddhism and Christianity. It displays my abilities to  make connections to major effects and their causes. The table is okay. It has four causes and effects for both religions, which is not great. For Buddhism, it seems a little too focused on monks traveling to spread Buddhism. Thesis: Although both China and India’s political systems were influenced by tradition, India’s caste system created no need for laws, while the qin dynasty’s legalistic system created very rigid ones. The two flowcharts show a continual effect of tradition or religion on India and China’s political systems. It displays my abilities to connect separate events into one continuous lineage of facts. The flowcharts do point out main ideas I was trying to display, but they seem a little bit incoherent at times.

Social War :: Personal Narrative Essays

Social War "That's her, that's the new girl. That's Holly Bennett. She is going to be in our group and not theirs," Mandi told us, as Holly shyly made her way over to the teachers desk. Our regular gang was sitting in the middle of 8th grade English. We were all seated in a circle in the back corner of the old, smelly classroom. Our "enemies," as we called them, were seated in the opposite corner. Mandi, Summer, Kristi, Lindsey, Anna and I were all pretty close friends then. It seemed like you had to be in one of two groups, ours or theirs, to even be talked to by everybody else. Our "enemies," were more or less what you might call the "preppies". They were the few who could get the boys to do whatever they wanted, had lots of high school friends, and could look at the teacher the right way, to get an A on their reports. We got along fine with them, except when a new girl came into our class. The new girls always seemed to start a cold war between us. Last time, we tried everything to get the new girl, Kristi, to hang out with us instead of the preps. We ended up "winning" Kristi over, which made the new meat worth even more. As Mrs. Gallegos, our elderly, over weight teacher, was introducing Holly, many thoughts went racing through our heads. I think we were all pretty much thinking along the same lines, "She's ours." As Holly took a seat over near the door, we began conversing among ourselves. Holly was skinny, tall, had brownish hair and seemed to be very shy. This made several things easy for us. Most of the people in our group were skinny and tall, so that meant we could share clothes amongst ourselves and now Holly could too. As we were planning on how to make Holly ours, I glanced across the room, and saw that our enemies were doing the exact same thing, planning. I told the other girls to look over at them, and then decided that we should first tell them not to even bother with trying to win Holly over. We, after all, had won the last girl, which made the ratio from our group to theirs, 6 to 4.

Accountability Issue of Petronas

Accountability issue of PETRONAS-Transparency 1. According to the article written by Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, a politician from Sabah who was a Vice President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat when he wrote this article. He said that Petronas agreements have been classified as secret. The clauses in the agreement are shielded from public scrutiny, this leads to transparency issue arise and making it an organization without public accountability. For example, 80% of the oil produced by Petronas is not sold directly to the world market but is channeled through six ‘option holders' who obtain the supply from Petronas at below market prices.Only 20% of the oil produced by Petronas is sold through direct open bidding. Because of this arrangement, Petronas is not maximizing its revenue by dealing direct with the open world market. Instead, it has been incurring incalculable losses for the nation and for the people. How much this huge loss is, we will never know. It is understood that this s upply through the option holders is sold by contracts with a binding agreement for 20 or 30 years, causing huge losses for Petronas when oil price increases, as Petronas would then have to continue selling at the old agreed price.Because of the agreement (contract) is not disclose to the public, thus, the public do not know who these option holders are and why they are in the first place. Besides, the public also wondering that are these people representing certain private interests? Because of the non transparent of Petronas agreements, many questions have been raised and the public think Petronas is a huge organization which is not accountable and secretive. 2. The annual report of Petronas is not in detail. For example, we can make a comparison between the 2011 annual report of Shell and 2011 annual report of Petronas. As we can see from the picture below, the related party disclosure of Shell is more detail than Petronas. Shell discloses the company name that where the sale to an d where the purchase from, however, Petronas just disclose the sale and purchases in general. This also means that Petronas annual report lack of transparency. In addition, Shell annual report also provides a detailed information of company properties, whereas, Petronas did not provide this information in annual report. | |

Single and Marriage Life

Hellow my dear friends and my honarable teacher, this is farhana yeasmin mumu and thereis my group members,at first/first of all I want to/ wanna introudce them to u†¦. 1. x 2. y 3. z Now um on the point, why we are standing front of you In this room there is we can divided or separate by a margine/line wre the students and our honarable teacher/Lecturer About our Presenetation there is a big picture to get/reach in to the point If I don’t make any mistake we are all the student in this room, still we are leading the single life , which we called bheacelor or unmarried life. who is sitting front of us the madam or teacher he has got a family as his own If I try to make some compirasson or difference between our teacher and me, the daily routine or thes schedule will be focused. Because um single and she has got a family,in that point im responsible just for my self and she has to responsible about lot of things. Its very easy to understand single and married life both are just the period of our life line. After passed the chilldhood we went to the school, collage and complete the graduation, then the getting marrige this subject came in our every single life, as a moral fact. Somebody takes the responsibility emideatly or some body takes it/that lately. Today, a lot of significant number of people are being married and still being single. This has changed their lives and gives differences between one another. In this essay, I’m going to compare and contrast the differences between single people lives and married people lives in lifestyle, companionship, and responsibility. In lifestyle, single people will have much more privacy in their lives. They will not be bothered by anybody at home. Nobody will command them not to sleep late, not to watch telivision too much and so on and so on. Therefore, single people live life freely. They can spend their time with their friends anywhere at anytime they want. In contrast, married people will be bothered with their partners. They have to take care of each other and if they have children things would become a lot more complicated. They can’t live a free lifestyle. They need to get permission from their partners if they want to go out with friends, best friends or whatever you name it. In general, married people are more busy because simply the strong bond between their children and their partners are tangible. Secondly, companionship is another distinct difference between single and married people lives. A husband will depend on his wife, and a wife will depend on her husband. Livelihood will be achieved easily by married people from their partners, parents and from their children. In contrast, single people don’t depend on anybody except their friends and parents. They can’t trust anyone else to share their secrets or to rely on shoulders. However, livelihood can be achieved from their parents and their friends. Lastly, married people are more responsible and busy than single people. They have to manage their money or expenses gently and economically every day. They are also responsible for raising their children and guiding their families in the right manner. Otherwise, they can ruin their lives easily. Married people are also responsible to manage their time for their families. They have to spend their time with their children, husband or wife every day. In contrast, people who still remain single don’t have schedule to look after their children or partners and they are not obligated to guide and/or manage their livings. Therefore, they are much less responsible than married people. There they are; lifestyle, companionship, and responsibility are the 3 main differences between single and married people lives. In my opinion, being a married person is better than being a single person, because we are created by God with partner like Adam and Eve story. Independence * Once you are married, you no longer exist as an independent entity. You might keep your job and your relationship might be excellent, but from your wedding onward you must always think as a husband and wife. The decisions you make affect your future together. The things you buy have an impact on both of your finances. Everything you do must be considered from your husband or wife's point of view. When you are single, you only have to consider your own interests when making decisions, but you are also short the emotional support that makes hard decisions easier to bear. Money * Getting married can have significant monetary benefits, but it also can be quite costly. Married couples receive a tax break and benefit from the ability to pool their financial resources. Mortgage and rent payments are split. Single individuals receive no tax break and must cover their living costs on their own. On the downside for married couples, single people can spend money when and where they see fit without worrying about an angry spouse. Free Time * Being married is a lot like a second job. You have to work at it for it to be successful. Married couples need dedicated time to communicate with one another and help each other with their emotional and physical demands. Because of this, married people usually have less free time to spend hanging out with friends or checking out the latest movie. If you are single, you have more free time but also might find that your free time is not as fun without someone with which to spend it. The Future * One of the core elements of marriage is that in most cases it symbolizes the beginning of a family. Married couples spend more time discussing the future — how to save money, what sort of career choices to make and when to start thinking about children. Married people are more concerned with their future ability to raise their family than many single individuals who do not have to worry about much beyond their monthly expenses. o get married, you will also learn to have more responsibilities as well as learn to be more busy than your single life and step through many sharings between the two of you. there are many differences and similarities in married and single life about responsibilities as well as money and activities. Living a single life can be significantly different from being married. A marriage traditionally marks the beginning of a family; on the other hand, usually being single means that having a different solo life. A single person would have more independence than a married person. The differences between single and married life range from very small to very large, but there are few core contrasts that show the main differences between the two lifestyles. Differences between single and married men. married life will provide a person with emotional support that is such a great help in meeting ups and downs of life . For all the value placed on friendship , friends also have their own lives to care for , and their input in an individual ‘s will always be limited . Besides , as we grow older , we are likely to drift apart from the parental family . Our spouse and children will then serve as a prop , helping us in the difficult moments of our life and sharing our joys . Over the course of my married life , I can remember so many instances when even a brief talk with my husband in the evening relieved my worries . The freedom and carelessness of single life disappear in marriage , but when you begin to care for others , in a happy marriage you are rewarded by enjoying their care in return Single Life and Married Life There is something about marriage that changes everything it starts from when you say I do. When you’re single you have more liberty in the aspect of coming and going with friends, with no worries in the financial aspect of things. Marriage is about respecting each other becoming one versus single life is really about two separate people knowing each other. In the life of a single person everything within the home environment is under the persons own control. Therefore he or she does not have to consider others before making decisions. In addition, the single person has no need to consult anyone else regarding any decisions such as house decoration, holiday dates and locations. Thus there is no need to compromise. Furthermore, everything within their life belongs to a single person. He or she owns his or her life completely and does not need to share any aspect of it with another person. Existence is within his or her own space. Being single is for those you are not ready to take the next step in life. They are still working on themselves. It is not a bad thing. We must all find ourselves first to be able to know who that great person is that we end up sharing the rest of our lives with. When you find yourself, then it is so much easier to find that true person that belongs in your life. Marriage is a great new step one takes in life. It comes to your heart when you take a good look at your life and you realize something is missing. You have never had it to begin with but yet you miss it. Then you realize what the next step in your life is. Finding that person is so much easier when you know who you are first. In married life, Control is compromised through the need to consider a partner's feeling or opinions. Similarly, everything within the married environment has to be shared. Whilst both parties may be able to find some space of his or her own, the majority of the time this will be shared with others.

How to Decline an Offer of Admission to Graduate School

How to Decline an Offer of Admission to Graduate School If you were accepted to a school that you no longer wish to attend, youll have to consider writing a graduate school rejection letter. Perhaps it was not your first choice, or you found a better fit. Theres nothing wrong in declining the offer- it happens all the time. Just make sure to take action and be prompt in your response. Tips on Declining a Grad School Offer Here are a few things to keep in mind: Respond soon: Once you know the school is out, do not delay. Once you give up your spot, it may open up for someone else who really wants to attend that college or university. Plus, it looks bad not to respond at all- especially because the admissions committee devoted their time to evaluating your credentials.Keep it short:  You dont owe the university or college an explanation; just politely and briefly decline the offer (see the template below for wording ideas).Thank them: You may want to thank the admissions committee for their time. You never know when you may encounter one of the members during your career, so keep it nice.Dont disclose more than you need to:  You are not responsible for telling the school which college or university you will be attending. They may ask, but likely not.  Check it off:  You may not need to write a letter at all- some universities and colleges let you check a box declining their offer or do it with a few clicks online. Thanks, But No Thanks After you are done carefully considering all of your options and youre ready to decline the offer, how exactly do you word it? Responding with a short grad school rejection letter will do. This can be an email or a printed letter. Try something along the lines of the following. Dear Dr. Smith (or Admissions Committee): I am writing in response to your offer of admission to the Clinical Psychology program at Graduate University. I appreciate your interest in me, but I regret to inform you that I will not be accepting your offer of admission. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Rebecca R. Student Remember to be polite. Academia is a very small world. You likely will encounter faculty and students from that program sometime during your career. If your message declining the offer of admission is rude, you may be remembered for the wrong reasons.

Taliban Decrees and Prohibitions Against Women

Taliban Decrees and Prohibitions Against Women Immediately on taking over cities and communities in Afghanistan, the Taliban imposed its law, based on an interpretation of Sharia  or Islamic  law that was stricter than in any part of the Islamic world. The interpretation is at wide variance from that of most Islamic scholars. With very minimal changes, what follows are the Taliban rules, decrees, and prohibitions as posted in Kabul and elsewhere in Afghanistan beginning in November and December 1996, and as translated from Dari by Western non-governmental agencies. Short Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Short Paper - Essay Example The female characters, on the other hand, are wives to the male characters and they play unofficial roles in the unearthing of the murder. The thoughts, feelings, and reactions that one gathers while reading the play range from empowering to inspiring, considering the critical roles that women play in the story and in the society at large, particularly when it comes to their forensic knowledge. As one reads the story, some of the ideas that emerge are the role of women in driving key agendas of the society. Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, though lacking official roles in the play, offer insightful ideas on the case and help the investigation take a logical course. The clumsy looking kitchen described by the playwright is a depiction of the condition under which the Sherriff and the County Attorney were living under, together with their wives. The farmhouse that Susan Glaspell describes as having been recently abandoned shades more light about the setting of the story and one cannot agree more about the plight of the investigators. It is hard to deviate from the thought of the perfect setting for investigation but again one will understand that the story was set based on a 19th century incident. One would expect the investigation to have taken place at the actual crime scene, which was the bedroom. Perhaps the officers investigating the murder of Margaret Hossack’s husban d did not want to interfere with the evidence at the crime scene. When it comes to the feelings, reactions, and responses to the story, it is worth noting that the setting of the play is rather unique, considering that the storyline is a murder investigation. It is quite weird for a murder investigation to take place in a domestic setting. One would expect the collection of evidence to take place at the crime scene before the investigators proceed to the forensic lab for further

Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 12

Law - Essay Example Alain, while in the course of the act of helping Mrs Todd balance the shopping, owed a duty of care to the Plaintiff during the course of his employment. He approached the plaintiff to help her balance the shopping, and therefore was under the obligation of taking care while performing the act. However, he failed to take enough care and made the mistake of hanging the heavy shopping bags on the accelerator bar, which led to the scooter speeding off to disaster. Applying the test of remoteness to this case, we observe that Mrs. Todd was directly in the path of any act or omission of Alain. (1856) Alain did not act prudently and carefully while balancing the shopping bags. Any reasonable man would have known that hanging the bags on to the accelerator would amount to a disastrous accident, especially when Mrs Todd was still on the scooter. The case of first came out with the concept of duty of care. (1990, 1932) â€Å"There must be, and is, some general conception of relations giving rise to a duty of care, of which the particular cases found in the books are but instances. The rule that you are to love your neighbour becomes in law you must not injure your neighbour; and the lawyers question: Who is my neighbour? You must take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be likely to injure your neighbour.  Who, then, in law, is my neighbour? The answer seems to be - persons who are so closely and directly affected by my act that I ought reasonably to have them in contemplation as being so affected when I am directing my mind to the acts or omissions that are called in question. A manufacturer of products, which he sells in such a form as to show that he intends them to reach the ultimate consumer in the form in which they left him with no reasonable possibility of intermediate examination, and with knowledge that the absence of reasonable care in th e preparation or putting up of products will result in an injury

To Kill a Mockingbird Essay Example for Free

To Kill a Mockingbird Essay In a small town deep south in Alabama, two children reside in a house with their father Atticus. Maycomb was this town’s name, and within Maycomb lived the nastiest, most psychotic, recluse to have ever live, and it just so happens that this monster of a man is the neighbor of the two young children, at least this is how â€Å"Boo† Radley is perceived to be in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. â€Å"Jem† Jeremy Atticus Finch and â€Å"Scout† Jean Louise Finch, the two children, one four years younger than the other, the youngest being Scout, find themselves bound by curiosity to rip â€Å"Boo† Arthur Radley from his protective house. This is when the relationship of Boo Radley and the Finch children begin, but the relationship between Boo and the children change through the course of the novel. At first, the children both believe that Boo is a terrible monster and a prisoner within his own home. They, along with the entire town of Maycomb, believe he is a psychotic anger-filled maniac. The town even came up with rumors about him saying he stabbed his own father with scissors. The obsession with â€Å"Boo† begins when a young boy named Dill moves in with his Aunt who lives by Jem and Scout. Dill meets Jem and Scout resulting in Dill’s curiosity of meeting Boo Radley. That summer began the race to finally see Boo. At this time in the book the children describe Boo as a rodent-eating, drooling, ugly, tall, monster, hence the name â€Å"Boo†. They believed that everything about Boo and his house is haunted and would kill you. The children come up with different schemes to get Boo out of the house, but they all seem to fail. They continue to think of Boo this way until Boo starts to actually interact with the children. The transition of how Jem and Scout view Boo seems to happens quite rapidly, but actually takes a while for the children to realize Boo’s true personality. As Boo begins to leave gifts in the hole of a tree near the Radley house for them the children, starting with Jem, begin to think differently. He leaves gum, pennies, an old pocket watch, and more things he has to the children. It is then figured out that Boo is the one who put a blanket around Scout during the fire that occurred at Miss Maudies house. Th night was cold and that caring act seemed to give Boo a different sense of who he is to the children. The children are beginning to realize that maybe Boo isnt so bad. During Tom Robinson’s trial, an African-American man who is convicted of rape, it is said by Jem,â€Å"Scout, I think Im beginning to understand why Boo Radleys stayed shut up in the house all this time its because he wants to stay inside. Seeing the prejudice and racism that Tom suffered in his case makes the kids understand why Boo may have wanted to decide to stay in his house all these years. The kids come to see Boo as a real person when he saves them from Bob Ewell, the man who attempts to kill the children in revenge, and not the monster he was first portrayed as. Scout then treats him as she would any neighbor would. As Atticus said, â€Å"You never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them†. She now understands that Boo had been watching her and Jem the whole time, and that he was a true neighbor and was watching over them when they needed him. He was just a shy man who was very caring towards the children. Though she never sees Boo again after that night, Scout still thinks of him, as we can tell by her older selfs voice in this story. In this, the children’s maturity has definitely developed and it is evident in their relationship. By the end of the novel, they meet Boo and he is almost childlike in his mind due to lack of human contact over the past years, this may makes him almost closer to the children as he has a similar mental capacity. When they meet and Boo is about to leave to go back home he asks Scout if she could walk him home. This just goes to show how innocent and childlike Boo is. That he wants someone to walk him home as if he was scared to do so alone. Boo Radley and the children’s relationship had evolved from the beginning of the book to the end very dramatically from Boo being a monster to now his being a neighbor and a friend.

My Philosophy of Teaching Essay -- Graduate College Admissions Essays

My Philosophy of Teaching    As an undergraduate, I was a teaching assistant for several psychology courses, including introductory psychology, behavioral statistics and research methods. My first teaching experience was as a Teaching Assistant for statistics; I now believe that this is where my individual teaching philosophy began taking shape.    As a teaching assistant for behavioral statistics, I was exposed to the student's outlook on the material, in which a lack of enthusiasm for statistics was undoubtedly portrayed. The message was clear: seemingly uninteresting and inapplicable material equals uninterested students. The students that I assisted did not believe that this material would clearly impact their lives; they did not see a meaning or purpose in comprehending or learning the material aside from dutifully collecting a grade at the end of the semester.    Even as an undergraduate student, I was saddened by the lack of enthusiasm by other students for learning a topic that I felt could benefit everyone. Since that time, I have slowly develop...

Tracey †Wiersema Triple Axis (Operational Excellence)

Treacy and Wiersema assert that companies achieve leadership positions by narrowing, not broadening their business focus. Treacy and Wiersema identify three â€Å"value-disciplines† that can serve as the basis for strategy: operational excellence, customer intimacy, and product leadership. As with driving forces, only one of these value disciplines can serve as the basis for strategy. Treacy and Wiersema’s three value disciplines are briefly defined below: Operational Excellence: Strategy is predicated on the production and delivery of products and services. The objective is to lead the industry in terms of price and convenience. Customer Intimacy: Strategy is predicated on tailoring and shaping products and services to fit an increasingly fine definition of the customer. The objective is long-term customer loyalty and long-term customer profitability. Product Leadership: Strategy is predicated on producing a continuous stream of state-of-the-art products and services. The objective is the quick commercialization of new ideas. Dr. Franklin C. Lewis set up Energy Services Providers Inc. n October 2002, obtaining approvals from the New York Public Service Commission, the New York Independent System Operator, and various New York utilities. By April 2003 he started serving customers, from an office in his home on a quiet hill in Vermont. In 2005 ESPI became the largest electricity supplier in the National Grid territory in New York, with more accounts than any competitor, and by November 2007 the business became so big Lewis decided to move to premises in Williamstown, in the northwestern tip of Massachusetts. Some electricity suppliers attract new customers by offering amazing deals for three months, but require the customer to sign a contract for a year or two or more. ESPI does not have any contracts or cancellation fees. They just say, â€Å"try us and see. † Every company likes to advertise its customer service, but few live up to their promises. In the deregulated electricity market, however, ESPI has found that superior customer service is a sure way to differentiate itself. Many supply companies tend to do a churn and burn. They put telemarketers on to call a territory, get as many customers as they can, then go to the next territory. They don’t care whether those customers are saving money or not. † The ESPI business model is all about educating customers to save money on their electricity bills, which is a great incentive for new customers, and once they begin to realize the benefits, they tend to stay. Since deregulation, customers have been changing electric ity suppliers almost as fast as their socks, but ESPI can boast of customers who have remained loyal since 2003. Another service offered is help with grant applications to NYSERDA, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which offers grants to businesses for projects that will reduce their usage of electricity, whether by installing energy-efficient lighting or a new refrigeration unit. ESPI has experts who know exactly which form to fill out, how to do it, and they can walk you through it. ESPI dwells upon superb operations and execution. It is provided by their reasonable quality at very low cost. They have a task-oriented vision towards personnel which helps them excel amongst their competitors.

Love Conquers All Essay

I believe that a relationship is more than just love, it’s a balance of communication, love, and trust. The day I fell in love was a defining moment in my life. I now had a partner and a life long friend . My husband and I spent the first part of our marriage struggling over money issues. There was never enough money to take care of all the bills and the kids, as well as our moments. Still through all the rough hills we climbed, nothing ever broke our bond to each other. My husband tried repeatedly to find work so that he could support his family; he was so determined. At last an opportunity to build bridges emerged and he went for it. Grateful we were going to be financially secure, we now have three times the income he was making. Everything was looking up! We would not have to scrape by anymore. With the new career also came new challenges, my husband would be out of town five days a week. We have never even been apart! How was this going to work? I was a little scared to be alone, so we sat down and discussed the challenges together. I learned that he was nervous too. He was going to be so far away and could not protect his family. We just bonded together, it was emotional. We knew it was going to be a great opportunity for our family. â€Å"I am going to miss you so much, this is going to be tough†, I said while standing by his packed car. He pulled me in and held me tightly in his arms, kissing my forehead ever so gently and whispered,†I love you so much and this will only make us stronger.† We kissed each other good bye and away he drove. Then I cried! Week after week it became easier to say bye, but the tears always filled my eyes when I watched him drive away. This was the hardest thing we ever went through. During the time he worked out of town I became a stronger woman and mother. I learned that love can conquer all. We worked together more than ever before and we grew to understand just how much our family†¦

Platinum Facts on the Periodic Table of the Elements

Platinum Facts on the Periodic Table of the Elements Platinum is a transition metal that is highly valued for jewelry and alloys. Here are interesting facts about this element. Platinum Basic Facts Atomic Number: 78 Symbol: Pt Atomic Weight: 195.08 Discovery Its difficult to assign credit for the discovery. Ulloa 1735 (in South America), Wood in 1741, Julius Scaliger in 1735 (Italy) all can make claims. Platinum was used in relatively pure form by the pre-Columbian Indians. Electron Configuration: [Xe] 4f14 5d9 6s1 Word Origin: from the Spanish word platina, meaning little silver Isotopes Six stable isotopes of platinum occur in nature (190, 192, 194, 195, 196, 198). Information on three additional radioisotopes is available (191, 193, 197). Properties Platinum has a melting point of 1772 Â °C, the boiling point of 3827 /- 100 Â °C, the specific gravity of 21.45 (20 Â °C), with a valence of 1, 2, 3, or 4. Platinum is a ductile and malleable silvery-white metal. It does not oxidize in air at any temperature, although it is corroded by cyanides, halogens, sulfur, and caustic alkalis. Platinum does not dissolve in hydrochloric or nitric acid but will dissolve when the two acids are mixed to form aqua regia. Uses Platinum is used in jewelry, wire, to make crucibles and vessels for laboratory work, electrical contacts, thermocouples, for coating items that must be exposed to high temperatures for long periods of time or must resist corrosion, and in dentistry. Platinum-cobalt alloys have interesting magnetic properties. Platinum absorbs large amounts of hydrogen at room temperature, yielding it at red heat. The metal is often used as a catalyst. The platinum wire will glow red-hot in the vapor of methanol, where it acts as a catalyst, converting it to formaldehyde. Hydrogen and oxygen will explode in the presence of platinum. Sources Platinum occurs in native form, usually with small amounts of other metals belonging to the same group (osmium, iridium, ruthenium, palladium, and rhodium). Another source of the metal is sperrylite (PtAs2). Free sample - The Eyes Can Be Deceived. translation missing

The Eyes Can Be Deceived. The Eyes Can Be DeceivedIn the short story of â€Å"Teddy,† it is true that eyes can be deceived. The truth presented was misrepresented. Teddy was a boy aged ten with stress, but people saw a calm child who was at peace with his surrounding and people around him. All the bitter stuff in his family emotionally affected Teddy that he felt he could not take anymore. The adults were too busy that they failed to understand a boy affected with situations around him. The boy felt unloved and unappreciated by his family. He felt so detached from other people. He was so frightened, but nobody was able to understand that because the child looked fine. His parent did not attend or observe him to know that he had a problem. They did not understand him since they thought he was speaking and acting like a child of his age. The child did things beyond him. They saw a child and never considered what the child thought or felt. The adults never notice that the boy was desperately withdrawn. They failed to observe that he was also that the boy acted strangely by distancing himself from his parents and sister. He felt the urge to do that because he felt unloved and uncared for. He plans and records his death just as an adult contemplating suicide would do. Nicholson did not listen keenly or take the words of Teddy seriously when he talked about his death (Salinger, 2010).   He did not even bother to know why the young boy said that and what he meant. The adult took Teddy as a child who did not know what he was saying. A child’s word is taken as a mare joke, but that should not have been in the case of Teddy. He was serious in what he said and meant it. He wanted to defend himself from a self-centered society. People saw Teddy as a little child who could not understand what was going on. Their eyes deceived them because the reasoning of Teddy was far beyond that of a child. Teddy was not a child at all since he could understand so many things categorized as adult stuff. He felt that adults are stubborn people who are tolerant and irresponsible. To him they did not accept their faults to correct them and they were aggressive for nothing. Teddy was a victim of the children’s character of the perception that a child could not understand some issues that happen in the adult world like responsibility. The eyes of grownups were deceived and overlooked; Teddy needed acceptance and love. His actions were clear in the way he was withdrawn from other people a thing observable yet nobody noticed. A child of Teddy’s age would not be so serious in noting down his actions in a notebook (Salinger, 2010). He was seriously concentration on what he had written in his notebook. People looked at him as a child and failed to understand he was up to something serious or dangerous. People feel that a child is not able to understand the pressures of life, therefore, never get stress. Nicholson found him seated alone yet he could not understand he was stressed up and lonely. The boy had written something down about his contemplated death. Nicholson had observed hid write, but never bothered to know what Teddy was writing. Teddy was struggling in life just like sixteen-year-old boy suffering in insecurities to grasp his personality that was unappreciated (Salinger,   1994). It is true that people make a judgment based on what they see and not what they hear. A child of Teddy’s age would not make his argument about life and issued in life as he did. Nicholson question Teddy’s spirituality and his responses amused him. It was astonishing how the boy argued and presented his ideas. The boy’s love for God was unsentimental and that of his parent did not matter to him. He continues to say that he was a person progressing well spiritually, but not a holy man. This is an argument for a person far above his age. Teddy comments on how he stopped meditating after meeting a woman and fell from grace (Salinger, 2010). The boy clearly understood that spiritual matters are personal which a child of his age would not understand. Additionally, the argument that death was not something major it was just parting with the body. He seemed not to be afraid of death like any other child. Teddy makes a statement about his sister pushing him to the pull and breaking his skull (Salinger, 2010). Nicholson does not understand that the statement was a prediction for his death and said it to instill guilt to the adults once it occurred. The intelligent boy also felt that his sister Booper hated him. He said that his sister would push him and he would die so that after committing suicide the sister would fear horrified and miserable. This makes him designs his death to instill guiltiness to everybody that surrounded him. In conclusion, grownup should have concentrated Teddy and observed him closely. His intellectual and argument should have made them listen to him and would have seen a disaster that he had predicted. They should not have taken him as a child and thus, would have prevented his action. This is because as the story ends Teddy thrusts himself into the pool. It was evidenced by the screams of his little sister. He never died as evidenced by the empty pool. References Salinger, J. D. (2010). Nine Stories. New York: Back Bay Books. Salinger, J. D. (1994). Revamp Your Resume How to Choose Fonts

Revamp Your Resume How to Choose Fonts Within the bounds of taste and good judgment, a resume can be a place to express your best professional self. While â€Å"Best Resume† lists often focus on formatting and use of white space, don’t forget to think about your font choices- your first presentation of words to a potential employer. Patricia Antonelli over at TalentEgg has some more specific guidance for those of you who don’t know your Papyrus from your Antigua Bold. Generally you want a font size that is legible, even on mobile devices, but not so big that it looks like a sign posted on a billboard- shoot for size 11, except for your headers.1. Serif FontsOpen up a Word document and try out some of these, like Baskerville or Georgia. Serif fonts have little lines at end of each letter stroke. Fonts with serifs come across as â€Å"more traditional and reliable†- they tend to look better in print than on a screen, so select one of them if you’re going to be handing out your resume in ha rd copy.Avoid Times New Roman! It’s an obvious choice that signals employers you don’t know how to make your work stand out.2. Sans Serif FontsFonts like Helvetica and Calibri lack the little tails on serif fonts, and read more cleanly on-screen. These are safe choices for business jobs or any online application process. Coordinate your choice with your cover letter for a cohesive, polished look.Formal and traditional? Serif is the way to go. Contemporary and sleek? San serif probably sends the right message.3. Script FontsYou can get away with a script font for your name at the top, but fancy fonts like Zapfino or Bickham Script can look messy in print or fail to translate on another operating system. The last thing you want is an unintelligible resume, so don’t try to make yours look like someone wrote it with a quill pen.4. Display FontsAnything in the â€Å"other† category like Giddyup or Jazz is a big risk- some people may see them as fun and creativ e, but unless you’re applying for visual arts jobs (like a graphic designer or teaching artist) it’s probably better to err on the side of professionalism. Check out the company’s website to see what their visual style is, and try to find something complementary. You want your resume to show off your experience and achievements, and any font that distracts from that is the wrong choice. Have a friend glance over your resume before your submit it; if the font is the first thing they notice, before your name or objective, keep looking until their first response is, â€Å"What a great-looking resume!†

Constantine and Christianization Research Paper

Constantine and Christianization - Research Paper Example His mother was a Christian and it is assumed that her influence may have been a factor in his conversion, although this is based on speculation since there is no record relating to the reasons for his faith. He was undoubtedly a man of conviction who changed his spiritual allegiance out of sincere motives, but his individual beliefs do not explain the gradual consolidation of the Christian place which took place during his lifetime. In order to explore this fascinating period of history and explain the rapid process of Christianization in this period it is necessary to look at the political and economic conditions of the time as well as some of the religious and philosophical debates which were carried out in clerical and academic circles. Constantine became emperor of the whole Roman Empire in 324 at a time when most of the Roman authorities were convinced that the stability of the empire depended upon persecuting Christians and promoting the traditional polytheistic religion of Roman antiquity, while admitting some secular and philosophical debate drawn from the widely popular Greek culture of the time. According to Gill (1) Constantine’s conversion to Christianity was one major contribution to Western history but it is matched by his creation of the illustrious city of Constantinople, which became a model for other cities to follow and a rival to the glory of Rome. His massive building plan gave greater credibility to the Christian faith, particularly as he was interested in Church architecture and devoted significant sums of money to Christian projects. Constantine was a remarkably generous patron to the arts and architecture, leaving his mark on the history of European culture in the form of many ambitious buildings which together characterise what came to be known as Byzantine culture. Some important
